Seek out and choose a local environmental non-profit. There are many individuals and groups working hard to affect positive change in your city, your duty is to become aware of these efforts. Answer the following questions in detail. Organize the information into a 2-3 page report about the non-profit. You will present this information to your peers in a 5-10minute presentation. Visual aids and multimedia can be used.
Extensions:
- Students will understand the environmental issues facing their city, and have a greater awareness of their fellow citizens who are working to help better their community.
- Students have information about organizations which can help them facilitate positive environmental change in their city.
Objectives:
- Students will produce a report about a local environmental non-profit and describe their efforts in the community.
- Students will recognize an environmental issue that exists in their city.
- Students will share their report information with their peers in a formal presentation.

- What is the mission and/or goal of the organization?
- Where are they located? Do they have a headquarters? Do they offer educational opportunities?
- Do the goals of this organization meet a need in society today? Why or why not?
- What is the history of the organization: when was it founded? Where? By whom? Why was it started?
- What are some of the accomplishments of the organization over the years? What are its future goals?
- What kind of membership does it have: How many members? What type of people support the group and why? · What is the budget of the organization? (This can be found on the Web sites of many organizations or go to the following Web sites:www.guidestar.org , www.nccs.urban.org , https://www.gvsu.edu/jcp/)
- What amount of their budget is brought in by donations?
- Based on the information your group found, would your group members support this organization if you had the economic means or time to volunteer? Why or why not?
Extensions:
- Students may collectively choose one of the organizations as a destination for a class fieldtrip.
- Students may earn extra credit for volunteering with one or more of the researched organizations.
- Students may utilize the non-profits resources to organize an on campus event.
