The Music Curriculum is designed to be a linear progression of steps through the songwriting process. Students are introduced to song form and creative writing through a series of interactive classroom activities. Songwriting extensions are provided for those groups choosing to create their own music, or who are looking for more in depth music instruction.
From Science to Music - Collecting Words and Ideas
Students will analyze, synthesize and identify salient truths about their city’s ecosystem, they will debate, discuss, and share observations about their city, and students will create a collection of ideas to use in the songwriting process. The Lyric Based Approach Students will analyze song lyrics for literary devices, compose original song lyrics related to the theme “Nature vs. Urban Life,” and utilize creative and analytical abilities as they experience writing the verses of a song as a literary art form. The Music Based Approach Students will analyze five qualities of a song with their teacher, including its instrumentation, genre, tempo, tonality and time signature. Students will evaluate additional songs, organizing the specific qualities of the song inside of an organizational chart. Don't Bore Us, Get Us to the Chorus
Students will devise a list of popular songs with the catchiest choruses, they will synthesize lyrics for a main idea, and use the main idea of a song to inspire the composition of three distinct choruses. Does My Song Need a Bridge Students will listen closely to the form of several musical selections in order to locate the bridge, determine if their original song needs a bridge.Students will use compose a bridge and place it in their original songs. |

Students will manipulate the parts of an original song to achieve the best form, and they will consider additional sections that may or may not enhance the form of their song. |

Alternative Songwriting Ideas A collection of alternative ideas utilizing different learning modalities to deepen the student's engagement with the songwriting process. Use to extend the songwriting process. Little Kids Rock - Composition A host of activities which can allow for more access points into the songwriting process. Little Kids Rock is a national 501 nonprofit organization based in Verona, New Jersey that provides free music instruction and instruments to under-served public school districts across the United States. Their 'Modern Band' curriculum is rooted in popular music and their teaching methods are rooted in the teaching music as a language, with a heavy emphasis on composition and improvisation. Little Kids Rock - Technology A series of instructional materials on how to use DAW (Digital Audio Workstations), with info graphics, and activities. Utilize this material, if students are choosing to create their own music digitally.
